Designing Your Community for Great Engagement (Part 2 of 3)

We’re back for Part 2 in our 3-part series on using habit formation to design for engagement inside your membership community.
If you missed Part 1, we talked about how prompts work—the little nudges that get people to show up and pay attention.(If that sounds like something your community needs, go back and watch it here.)
But showing up is only the beginning. What happens next? What keeps someone in the room and makes them feel like,
“Yes. This is worth it. I belong here.”
That’s what we’re unpacking in this next part of the series.
Why "Engagement" Still Feels Fuzzy
I’ll be honest—engagement is a word I have a love/hate relationship with.
It gets thrown around constantly. And yet, it rarely means the same thing to two different people.
So in this video, I invite you to define great engagement for yourself.(Seriously, take 30 seconds and write down what “engagement” looks like for you.) Once that’s clear, we can look at what it actually takes to make those things happen.
What You’ll Learn in Part 2
In this short, practical breakdown, I’ll walk you through:
✅ How the tiny habits framework maps beautifully onto community building
✅ Why most member actions aren’t happening—and what you can do about it
✅ A visual Engagement Journey Map to spot friction and flow
✅ How to lower the “activation energy” so the right actions feel obvious, light, and do-able
It’s one thing to get your members through the door. It’s another thing to help them actually do the thing you want them to do.
This is where most creators get stuck—and where this map can help.
Ready to Map Your Member Actions?
I made you a free tool to go with this episode.Use it to sketch out your own member flow and start identifying where your people need more ease, support, or clarity to move forward.
What’s Coming Next?
Part 3 is dropping soon and we’re talking rewards.
(You know… the part where people feel seen, satisfied, and actually want to come back.)
If you’re not already on the Ember newsletter list, join here to be the first to know when the final video in the series drops.
And if you’re watching along already:
→ What landed for you in this part?
→ What actions are you trying to make easier in your space?
Hit reply or leave a comment—I’d love to hear what you’re noticing in your own community.
