Circle, Heartbeat, or Mighty Networks: Compare Community Platforms

This article is routinely updated as new features are rolled out from Circle, Heartbeat, and Mighty Networks. It was last updated October 2026.

Introduction

Whether you are creating a new community or you’ve outgrown your Facebook group or Slack channel, every community manager will at some point wonder which community platform is a good fit for you. I’ve found this process to be daunting with tons of overpriced options and few resources to help compare and contrast. The purpose of this article is not to declare a winner between these platforms, but rather to help you put the pieces together more easily to understand the best fit for your community.

In this article, we chose to focus on non-Enterprise, all-in-one platforms with templated structures and customizable features.

Comparison Chart

Circle (this is an affiliate link) is an asynchronous community platform that has a simple and sleek layout. It has 15+ themes, an Email Hub add-on for broadcasts and segmented campaigns, and deeper checkout customization than the other two, and its AI ranges from limited drafting help on Professional to member-facing AI Agents on Plus. It is easy to white-label. It suits freemium models, though I do not recommend them, and it is aimed mainly at creators, though brands use it more and more. Circle boasts some pretty impressive communities hosted on their platform including Jay Clouse's Creator Science, Ness Labs, and The Upside. While Circle heavily targets creators looking to turn their audience into a paid community, brands are increasingly using the platform to host their own customer communities as well. Find examples of communities in their showcase. Circle's design centers on asynchronous conversation, though they have significantly expanded their features and functionality especially since securing funding.

Heartbeat (this is an affiliate link) is a synchronous community platform that shines when hosting communities that need both public and private events. It is popular with cohort-based communities and courses, and I host my own community there. Public events can now be paid and priced by member group, every cohort runs independently, and Pulse AI builds courses, offers, workflows, and landing pages from a conversation.

Their 2026 updates include:

  • Pages, which let you build your community's landing page inside Heartbeat with AI-generated drafts

  • Lead magnets, so any Resource can live on a public link with free, email, or paid access

  • Member Journeys and a Leads table, plus an On Lead Captured workflow trigger

  • A payments table with refunds, and Stripe subscription import to bring paying members over from another platform

  • Easier custom domains, with the first year free, and $0 waitlists to build your list before you sell

  • The member-facing interface translated into Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and German

Mighty Networks  has been around for several years and was effectively one of the first community platforms. It started as a learning platform. Its 2026 rebuild replaced the nested menus with a flatter structure and added a searchable admin panel, so the navigation problems I used to flag are much weaker now. Communities built before the rebuild can still look dated, because hosts were not required to migrate. Mighty now has unlimited members on every plan, unlimited automations, and a gamification system built on streaks, peer recognition, and leaderboards.

Acknowledging my bias:

You will probably be able to tell my bias for Circle and Heartbeat over Mighty Networks right away. That gap is smaller than it used to be. Mighty's 2026 rebuild fixed most of what I disliked, and Heartbeat has closed several gaps of its own, including AI and landing pages. There are loads more community platforms out there, and I left them out because they are weaker for the communities I work with or outside the scope of this article.

How to decide which community platform is right for you?

At the end of the day, the platform you choose matters less than how you design and implement your community. That being said, certain platforms can create way more barriers than necessary depending on the programming strategy of your community. While it's important to plan ahead, try to make the majority of your decision on where your community is today, not where you suppose it will be in five years.

For a really practical approach, for each row in the table, rate how that platform’s features stack up based on what you need. Total each column up and make a quantitative decision. But we highly encourage you to get in and test each platform yourself (each has a free trial) to play around and get a feeling for it yourself.
